How to Invite Jesus Into Your Workplace: Finding God at the Table of Work
What if your workplace is more than just a job? What if your boardroom, classroom, or coffee table could become holy ground? In a world where work often feels like a grind, Jesus offers something radically different: partnership. Whether you're in a high-rise downtown or working remotely from your kitchen table, God is already present and working. The real question is—are you awake to it?
God Has Always Valued Work
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” – Genesis 2:15
From the beginning, work was part of God's good design. Before sin entered the world, Adam was invited to work and care for creation. Work isn't a punishment; it's a calling. It matters to God how we show up in our jobs, how we care for what we've been given, and how we reflect His character through our tasks.
Jesus Is Still Working Today
“My Father is working until now, and I am working.” – John 5:17
Jesus didn’t stop working when He ascended to heaven. He’s active—in you, around you, and even at your workplace. In fact, He wants you to become His coworker.
“The Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing.” – John 5:19
Just as Jesus modeled complete dependence on the Father's work, we are invited to observe and join God in our daily routines. That means your spreadsheet, lesson plan, or shift schedule could become a site of divine collaboration.
Invite Jesus Into Your Work and Workplace
“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning...” – Luke 12:35-37
Are you spiritually awake at work? Jesus said blessed are those who are ready when the Master knocks. Expect interruptions. Expect opportunities. Expect divine appointments.
Expect Jesus to Knock
Knocks can come in surprising ways:
A coworker opening up about anxiety
A student needing someone to believe in them
A tense meeting where you bring peace instead of pressure
SELAH: Are You Awake to What God Is Doing at Work? Take a pause. Reflect. Work isn’t just what you do—it’s where you are sent.
The Table of Work Is Already Set Every day you sit at tables:
Boardroom Table: Strategy, decisions, leadership
Coffee Table: Informal chats, relational moments
Lunch Table: Shared meals, stories, openness
Desk Table: Emails, tasks, quiet diligence
Car Table: Phone calls, prayer, in-between moments
Each one is a space where God can work through you.
Joining Jesus at Work: 3 Everyday Ministries
Ministry of Presence: Just being present with intentionality and peace can change a room.
Ministry of Listening: People are desperate to be heard. You can be the one who listens.
Ministry of Compassion: Kindness and empathy make the gospel tangible.
Work Obstacles to Avoid
Shoddy Work: Excellence honors God. Sloppiness undercuts your witness.
Being a Jerk: No amount of "truth" justifies unkindness. Love is your loudest sermon.
As Dorothy Sayers said, "The very first demand that his religion makes upon him is that he should make good tables."
What This Means for You God has already placed you at the table. Your work matters. Your coworkers matter. And Jesus is already at work—will you join Him? The hurting people around you are not just projects; they are invitations to love. Ministry isn’t just for pastors. It’s for programmers, baristas, teachers, and team leads.
